I have always enjoyed visiting St. Albans Cathedral with its architectural mosaic of styles built in different ages.
The following aerial view is a loose reconstruction of the Medieval cathedral, the abbey with all its ancillary buildings and the surrounding market town.
The Benedictine abbey was dissolved in 1539 under king Henry VIII's suppression act. The buildings surrounding the cathedral were gradually demolished or robbed of stone to construct other buildings in the city.
We modelled this 3d based on Joan Freeman's oil painting. The scene was then textured, populated and rendered in 3ds max & V-ray and post-produced in Photoshop.
